Tryouts FAQS

Age Group Changes and Tryouts

Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, US Club Soccer and U.S. Soccer have mandated a shift from birth-year to school-year age groupings for all youth soccer in the United States. This change applies to all clubs.

All players will try out within their new age group. Team placement will be based on tryout evaluations, along with input from coaches within each age group. Our goal is to place every player on the team that best reflects their current ability, potential, and developmental needs.

In rare cases, players may be invited to "play up." These decisions may also take into account special circumstances beyond on-field ability. Coaches will collaborate to thoughtfully evaluate these situations and make decisions that best support each player and family.

As players grow and develop, there may be recommendations for movement between teams during the year to ensure the best developmental fit.

If a player or family declines the initial team placement recommended by coaches, we will work to explore alternative options where possible. The full rostering process may take approximately 1–2 weeks to complete.

Can my child try out for multiple age groups?

No. Players must attend tryouts for their age-group. In select cases, players may be invited by coaches to participate in an older age group or higher level of play after tryouts.

Is there a cost to try out?

No—tryouts are free.

What should my player expect at tryouts?

Tryouts include small-sided games and skill-based activities designed to evaluate technical ability, game awareness, athleticism, and attitude. We aim to create a positive, comfortable environment where players can simply play and enjoy the game.

What are coaches evaluating?

Our coaching staff evaluates players across four key areas: technical skills, tactical understanding, physical attributes, and attitude. Encourage your player to stay relaxed, engaged, and active so we can see their best.

How and when will we hear results?

Players will be notified within approximately one week after their final tryout session if they are selected for a team. Additional details will be shared as they become available.

What if my child cannot attend their scheduled tryout?

Please contact us at wenatcheefa@gmail.com to let us know. Alternative opportunities may be offered depending on scheduling and roster needs.

Can my child play high school soccer?

Yes. Many Wenatchee FA players also participate in high school soccer. Our competitive calendar is structured to align with the high school season.

How often do teams train?

Most teams train 2–3 times per week, with sessions typically lasting 60–90 minutes. Training schedules may vary based on the team and coaching approach.

What else should we know before tryouts?

Please plan to arrive about 20 minutes early for check-in. Players should bring cleats, shin guards, and a water bottle, and dress appropriately for the weather. Parents are asked to refrain from coaching from the sidelines so players can focus and respond to the coaching staff.
