2026–2027 Age Group Transition FAQS
What is changing?
Beginning with the 2026-27 season, US Club Soccer and U.S. Soccer mandated a transition for youth soccer from "birth year" age groups (January 1 - December 31) to "school year" age groups (August 1 - July 31). This change will apply nationwide and impact all players and clubs.
Why is this change happening?
The "school year" model is intended to:
- Better align age groups with school year peers
- Reduce "trapped player" challenges (8th grade players)
- Improve efficiency in college recruiting
- Create a more consistent long-term player development pathway
How will age groups be determined?
Age groups are determined only by birthdate using the August 1 - July 31 range set by U.S. Soccer.
- Grade or graduation year does not determine age group
- Players may not play down
- There are no exceptions to the U.S. Soccer birthdate ranges
How will tryouts work?
The tryout process itself remains unchanged.
- Players must attend tryouts for their assigned age group based on birthdate
- Play-up opportunities are evaluated and approved by Directors only
- Families will be contacted directly if play-up is being considered
Will rosters change?
Yes. Because teams will be formed using new age group ranges, families should expect roster movement for the 2026-27 season. Our priority remains placing players where they can best thrive developmentally.
- Age groups most impacted will be U8-U14
How is Wenatchee FA preparing for this transition?
- Directors are reviewing age level break downs and identifying potential roster issues
- Directors are currently meeting with age group coaches to identify player specific changes and coaching assignments
Will I need to buy a new uniform?
Yes. This change conveniently aligns with the end of our two-year uniform cycle. We are entering the first year of a new two-year kit, so all players, new and returning, will purchase a new uniform for the 2026–27 season.
