About Coach Al

Born in California, Al is one of nine siblings, where the oldest and youngest are separated by 21 years. His early life was defined by the rhythm of the agricultural seasons. Each year, his family traveled from Michoacán, Mexico to California in late April to begin cherry harvest in Linden. By mid-June, they followed the crop north to Wenatchee, continuing their work through cherry, pear, peach, and apple harvests. When the season ended in late October, the family returned to Mexico, where life shifted to caring for livestock and preparing for the next cycle.

At the age of 11, Al made a pivotal decision to stay in the Wenatchee area with his older sister in order to focus on his education. He began school in Dryden, later attending classes in Peshastin, and eventually Leavenworth for middle school. By age 14, he had moved to East Wenatchee, where he attended Eastmont Junior High. He later earned his associate degree from Wenatchee Valley College in 1996.

Soccer has always been a constant in Al's life. His earliest memories of the game date back to when he was five or six years old, playing informal matches in California with friends. With makeshift goals made of shirts or shoes and small-sided teams, the joy of the game was simple and pure. That love carried into high school, where he played at Eastmont, though his playing career was cut short by a broken wrist suffered during a match in Ellensburg. Despite that setback, his passion for the game never faded.

In fact, the game found its way back into his life in new ways. As a young adult, Al returned to playing through local club soccer with San Isidro (now known as Los Diablitos). Around that same time, a friend encouraged him to help coach a team made up mostly of basketball players new to soccer. That experience sparked something unexpected—he discovered a true passion for coaching. What began as helping out gradually evolved into a lifelong commitment, taking him from player to coach and eventually into leadership as a Director of Coaching.

As a player, Al thrived in the midfield, embracing the responsibility of both defending and initiating attacks. That understanding of the game's flow continues to influence his coaching today, emphasizing versatility, awareness, and teamwork.

Family has always been at the center of his journey. Al began coaching his two daughters when they were five years old and continued as they advanced into competitive soccer with Wenatchee Fire FC and Wenatchee United. In 2011, alongside close friend and former coworker Frank Cuevas, Al helped found Wenatchee United—an idea that started as a casual lunchtime conversation and grew into something much bigger for the local soccer community.

Al's coaching philosophy is rooted in accessibility, growth, and belief. He firmly believes that soccer is a game for everyone—regardless of background, resources, or physical attributes. All it takes is a ball, a patch of grass, and the willingness to learn. His focus is on player development, helping athletes understand that while the game becomes faster and more competitive at higher levels, its core principles remain the same.

Rather than following specific teams, Al draws inspiration from coaches, particularly Pep Guardiola, whose approach to the game has influenced his own thinking since Guardiola's early days at Barcelona.
